How to Install a Greywater System


Installation Overview

The following are directions for installing the Flotender Greywater Processor in an instant distribution configuration.

There are four steps in the installation of a Flotender Greywater system:

1. Separate the greywater form backwater plumbing & install the greywater stub-out
2. Install the Flotender Greywater Processor
3. Install the Drip Irrigation System
4. Backfill & Final Tasks

The actual installation of the Flotender Greywater Processor (step 2) is a straight forward process and can be accomplished within a couple of hours by either the homeowner or landscaper and does not require plumbing expertise. The Flotender Greywater Processor ships 90% pre-assembled and includes straight forward and detailed instructions for the remaining assembly.



1. Separating Greywater Sources

In order for the Flotender Greywater Processor to function correctly, the greywater must be piped separately from the blackwater. In addition a greywater “stub-out” must be installed. The stub-out can be plumbed to a utility room or outside of the building as the Flotender Greywater Processor can be placed either inside our outside of the building. .

2. Installing the Flotender Greywater Processor

Once the greywater stub-out is in place, the greywater processor can be installed. The following features an in-ground installation. Flotender can also be placed above ground or in a utility room.



2-1 Choose a Location

For in-ground greywater processor installations, excavate and place the Flotender Greywater Processor on 1" of compacted sand. Sand will protect the bottom of the tank from sharp objects and help in leveling as you install the greywater processor.

2-2 Connect the Add-On Surge Tanks

Note: If your greywater system does not an add-on surge tank, skip this step.

Place the Flotender Add-On Surge Tank next to the Flotender Greywater Processor as shown in one of the configurations below. For connection details, please refer to the instructions included with the Add-On Surge Tank Connection Kit.

2-3 Connect to Greywater Stub-Out

Connect the Flotender Greywater Processor to the building’s greywater stub-out using the included PVC pipe and flexible coupling.

2-4 Connect the Overflow

Extend the overflow to drain above ground, below ground or to the existing sewer or septic line.

2-5 Connect the Filter Wash System

Connect the 1/2” purple stripe pipe to the side barb on the tee filter for the self-regulating filter wash system and then to the spray ring port on the greywater processor. (see next section for diagram)

2-6 Secondary Filter and Performance Indicator Connections

Install the secondary tee filter, connect the performance indicators, then connect the drip pipe to the barb on the tee filter. Refer to the illustration below:

3. Install the Drip Irrigation System

Use the port on the secondary filter labeled “to drip emitters” to connect the drip irrigation system. Please refer to the specific instructions provided by the drip system’s manufacturer. Flotender is compatible with both above ground and sub-surface drip irrigation.



4. Backfill and Final Tasks

Before backfilling around the Flotender Greywater Processor and piping ensure that the following have been completed:

  • The lid should be securely fastened before backfilling around the Flotender Greywater Processor. Take special care to ensure that dirt doesn’t get inside of the unit. - Backfill around the drip system.
  • Make sure all stainless steel clamps have been tightened before backfilling.
  • Cushion the pipe with rock free dirt and compact the earth in layers during backfill
  • Make sure that the terrain around the Flotender Greywater Processor is graded so surface water does not collect around the unit.



Servicing the Flotender Greywater Processor

The amount of maintenance required for the greywater filter varies depending on the type of greywater fixtures being installed and the amount that they are utilized. Typical service intervals range from once a month to once every 4 months. If washing machines are to be connected, service intervals will be closer to 1 month. If sinks, showers, bathtubs & sinks are connected the service interval will be closer to 4 months.


Cleaning the Primary Filter

To clean the primary filter, simply open the Access Cap, lift out the basket and wash off the debris.Finish Grey Water System Installation



Cleaning the Secondary Filter

To clean the secondary filter simply unscrew the filter from its casing and clean the element and media with a standard garden hose.
